Fresh Figs

Posted in Uncategorized at 9:16 am

We are fortunate to have a high school English teacher as our upstairs neighbor. Signora Louisa often leans over her balcony to talk to our kids playing on the terrace outside.

Last night after dinner our doorbell rang. Signora Louisa had a tray full of fresh figs for us. She was a little surprised when I told her that I have never tried a fig before, but where do you buy a fig in Missouri?! They were delicious! Sweet, but with a strangely crunchy texture. As she peeled the second one, she called the kids over. I was a little nervous, since none of our kids really enjoy trying new foods. I was relieved to see three smiling faces after they tried it. She told us that next time we eat them we should eat them like an Italian - a piece of unsalted, Perugian bread, a slice of cured ham, and a fig. I’ll have to work up to that one!

She speaks to us in English, because it’s good for her to practice. We speak to her in Italian because it’s good for us to practice. We enjoyed over an hour of cappucinos and conversation with Signora Louisa. God has blessed us with such a great neighbor.

Engliano

I had to set up an appointment today with my realtor to pay my rent and utilities. I called the office’s assistant, Francesca, to see when would be a good time to meet. As we were discussing schedules, she stopped and complimented my Italian. It was very nice to hear her say that my Italian was getting better! Without thinking, I replied…

“Well grazie!”

A horrible mix of English and Italian! Oops!

Another Rotert Birthday

Posted in Uncategorized at 12:11 pm

Today is my lovely bride’s birthday. After class (isn’t she awesome - she even goes to class on her birthday!) we went to a Chinese restaurant that she really enjoys. Pretty good food, but we were the only customers the entire time we were there. I don’t think that Italians like Chinese food very much! After lunch we went to go see Herbie: Fully Loaded. In Italian they changed the name to Herbie: Il Super Maggiolino - Herbie: The Super Beetle! It was a good movie to take the kids to and I was so proud when Lance said that “movies in Italian are a good way to learn some Italian.”

We’re about to have some American cake for Heidi’s birthday!
